I have pondered and planned, thought and researched, designed and doodled and now I am ready to start the SILK PROJECT!

It really isn’t like me to spend quite so much time dithering before launching into a project but I think because this project :

a) is for a friend

b) is very special in its significance

c) uses very expensive materials

d) something I’ve never done before

then part of me is a tiny bit (dare I say it) scared.

However, this is the week when I shall accomplish the bulk of the project. I am determined to face my fears and just jolly well get on with it!

Pep talk over – I’m going in!

So friends if I’m not around much this week you’ll know why ūüôā

La Belle √Čpoque

The museum close to where I live has an exhibition of Edwardian Fashion ‚Äď the so called ‚ÄėBeautiful Era‚Äô or ‘Belle √Čpoque’. I popped along recently and really enjoyed seeing all the costumes.

There were a selection of reproductions from the series Downton Abbey – I‚Äôve never seen this (so many people have told me how good it is, I‚Äôm not quite sure why I haven‚Äôt made the effort to watch it yet ‚Äď one day ūüėČ ) but I did enjoy seeing the costumes.

See if you can recognise them…

The rest of the display was of original, and very fragile, clothes.

This one is a lady‚Äôs wedding jacket, it was trimmed with the most beautiful hand embroidery done in soft pinks and greens. The photo is of the lady on her wedding day wearing the jacket ūüėÄ

This next photo shows a selection of other costumes, the dress on the left is an evening gown, hand embroidered and embellished with handmade Honiton lace, emerald green glass jewels on the bodice and …wait for it…iridescent beetle wings! The small close up shows just how bright they are. They were sewn all around the hem; she must have shimmered at her Ball.

And the other dress is a Tennis dress ‚Äď can you imagine playing tennis wearing that? They‚Äôd be no running round would there? Just a gentle rally where the ball is placed so you don‚Äôt have to move in order to hit it!

I‚Äôm so glad we have more sensible clothes nowadays, and less ‚Äėdress codes‚Äô to follow. What do you think?

Until next time,
